FAQ

Audio Equipment questions.

Low-level audio signals (phono cartridge output 2-5 mV) are susceptible to magnetic field interference. Magnetic enclosure materials can couple noise into sensitive circuits. For phono stages, headphone amps, and moving-coil cartridge electronics: non-magnetic aluminum or brass preferred over steel. We specify aluminum alloys (6061, 7075) and brass for audio work — both non-magnetic. Steel chassis acceptable for speaker drivers and power-domain components where interference less critical.
Unibody machined enclosure: rigid, single-piece structure eliminates rattle, vibration transfer, and gasket joints. Better EMI integrity (no seams leak RF). Premium appearance. Higher cost — starts from solid billet. Multi-piece (sheet metal + machined front panel): lower cost, flexible design, adequate performance for most audio. For flagship and premium audio, unibody chassis is expected. For mid-market, hybrid construction common.
Anodize dye colors Pantone-matched to brand specifications. Delta-E typically < 5 on anodized aluminum. For critical brand color consistency, we create sample approval panels before production. For premium brands (McIntosh blue, Accuphase champagne), specific color formulations maintained. Custom colors available through dye chemistry adjustment.
Audio enclosures benefit from mass and damping to reduce resonance. Aluminum provides some inherent damping. For premium applications, layered constructions (aluminum + viscoelastic + aluminum) provide excellent damping. Brass has different resonance characteristics — used selectively for specific sound tuning. For speaker cabinets, internal bracing critical for panel stiffness. We can manufacture damping-optimized enclosures based on customer specification.
Cosmetic surfaces: ±0.1 mm visual tolerance. Mounting and assembly features: ±0.1 mm. Precision features (tonearm pivots, turntable bearings): ±0.01 mm. Connectorless RF / EMI features: ±0.1 mm. Premium audio doesn't require ultra-precision machining — consumer-grade CNC tolerance adequate. Focus is on cosmetic excellence and consistent production quality.
Boutique audio: 50-500 units per design. CNC is cost-effective here. Mid-market audio: 500-5,000 units — CNC still competitive. Mass-market audio: 5,000+ units — may transition to die casting + CNC finishing or injection molded housings. For premium brands, CNC maintained even at higher volumes due to brand positioning. We support production ramp with appropriate process economics.
