03 · Tolerances

Tolerance you can defend
in a design review.

Every tolerance class below is backed by real measurements, not marketing. Parts in our top tier (High Precision) are shipped with a CMM report showing actual deviations on every callout.

A practical note: tighter tolerances cost more and take longer. We'll flag tolerances on your drawing that aren't serving a functional requirement — and often save you money by opening them up.

Standard

ISO 2768-m · medium

Typical for most prototypes and non-critical features. Default if no tolerance is specified on the drawing.

04 · DFM

Design for CNC — a practical guide.

Five high-impact rules that will save you money and lead time on almost every CNC part. All five get flagged automatically in our free DFM review.

01

Internal radii

Use the largest internal radius possible. Corners smaller than 0.8 mm require EDM or tiny end mills — expensive and slow.

02

Deep pockets

Depth-to-width ratio above 4:1 requires long end mills with chatter and deflection risk. Design pockets 3:1 or shallower.

03

Thin walls

Walls below 0.8 mm (metal) or 1.5 mm (plastic) deflect under cutting forces. Keep walls ≥ 1.0 mm metal, ≥ 2.0 mm plastic.

04

Threads

Tap threads have limits: depth should be 1.5–3× thread diameter. Use thread inserts (Helicoil) for frequent assembly or aluminum threads.

05

Tolerance zones

Only apply tight tolerances where they matter. Every ±0.01 mm callout adds ~$30–80 to the part cost. Default features should use ISO 2768-m.

07 · FAQ

CNC machining questions answered.

CIFProto provides 3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis CNC milling, CNC turning on conventional and Swiss-type lathes, mill-turn machining, surface grinding, wire and sinker EDM. We operate 40+ CNC centers across a 2,400 m² machining floor in Shenzhen.
Standard tolerances are ±0.1 mm (ISO 2768-m) for general features and ±0.025 mm (ISO 2768-f) for precision features. With 5-axis machining plus grinding we routinely hold ±0.01 mm on critical dimensions. Concentricity to 0.005 mm and flatness to 0.005 mm are achievable on ground surfaces. Every tight-tolerance part is CMM-verified before shipment.
40+ production materials including: Aluminum (6061, 7075, 2024, 5052), Stainless Steel (303, 304, 316L, 17-4 PH), Alloy Steel (4140, 4340, A2, D2, H13), Titanium (Grade 2, Grade 5), Brass (C360, C260), Copper (C110), Bronze, Inconel 625/718, Magnesium, PEEK, Delrin, Nylon, Polycarbonate, ABS, PTFE, Ultem, PMMA and more. Mill certificates (EN 10204 3.1) provided on request.
Our largest CNC envelope is 1200 × 800 × 600 mm on vertical machining centers. For turning, maximum diameter is 450 mm with length up to 1500 mm. Larger parts can be handled via fixturing or sub-assembly approach — consult our engineering team for parts exceeding these dimensions.
Standard lead time is 3–7 business days for prototypes and small batches (1–50 pieces). Rush service at 72 hours available on request for simple parts. Production runs of 100–1,000 parts typically ship in 10–15 days. Lead time excludes international shipping (add 3–5 days via DHL/FedEx Express).
Yes. FAI reports using AS9102 format are included at no charge for aerospace and precision batches. Reports cover every dimension on the drawing with measured values, tolerance zones and CMM-generated deviation maps. PPAP packages (levels 2, 3 or 4) available on request for automotive customers.
Preferred: STEP (.step/.stp), IGES (.iges/.igs), Parasolid (.x_t). Also accepted: SolidWorks (.sldprt), Pro/E or Creo (.prt), CATIA (.catpart), Inventor (.ipt), STL for reference. For critical features, include a 2D PDF drawing with GD&T callouts, tolerances, finish requirements and material spec.
Yes — CNC is ideal for production runs of 10 to 1,000 parts per SKU. We offer dedicated production cells for repeat orders, with lot-level traceability and first-article inspection on every batch. For volumes above 10,000 parts of plastic geometry, we can help you evaluate migration to injection molding.
As-machined (Ra 3.2 µm standard, Ra 1.6 µm fine, Ra 0.8 µm polished), bead-blasted (matte uniform), anodized Type II and Type III, powder coated, electroplated (nickel, chrome, zinc), passivated (stainless), black oxide, brushed, polished (up to SPI-A1 mirror), laser etched and silk screen printed. All finishes managed in-house or through long-term vetted partners under our QA.
Yes. A mutual NDA is signed before opening any customer CAD file on request. Our standard NDA template is available on request, and we can sign your version if it does not conflict with Chinese export law. All customer IP and tooling are owned exclusively by the customer.
