FAQ

Oil and gas questions.

NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 governs materials for sour (H2S-containing) service in oil and gas applications. Specifies material, hardness, and heat treatment limits to prevent sulfide stress cracking. We are capable of machining to NACE MR0175 requirements — meaning: sourcing qualified materials, controlling hardness after heat treatment (typically 22 HRC max for carbon and low-alloy steels, 35 HRC max for corrosion-resistant alloys), and documenting compliance. Final certification is customer's responsibility.
CIFProto does not hold API monograms directly. For API-monogrammed parts (API 6A wellhead, API 17D subsea, API 11D1 valves), customers work with our certified subcontracting partners for final marking. We handle machining and documentation, partner handles the certification and monogram. This arrangement is common for oil and gas OEMs who need API-monogrammed parts.
NACE-qualified: Inconel 625, Inconel 718 (aged properly), Incoloy 825, duplex 2205, super-duplex 2507, 316L, 304L, 17-4 PH (in H1150 temper), 15-5 PH (H1100), SAF 2507. For non-sour service: all standard steels, stainless, tool steels, titanium, copper alloys. PEEK for non-metallic seals and bearings.
Standard oil and gas components: 3–6 weeks depending on material availability (Inconel 625/718 may have 4–6 week mill lead times). Expedited: 2–3 weeks with material in stock. Full documentation packages (material certificates, heat treatment records, hardness testing, corrosion testing) add 3–5 days to standard lead time.
Yes. Positive Material Identification via X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is standard on oil and gas orders. We verify alloy composition on every critical part before final inspection. For customer-critical applications, we can also provide Rockwell hardness testing, charpy impact testing, and corrosion testing (HIC, SSC) through qualified test labs.
Inconel superalloys work-harden aggressively — requiring slow speeds, heavy feeds, and carbide/CBN tooling. Duplex stainless has mixed austenitic-ferritic microstructure causing variable cutting conditions. NACE hardness limits mean you can't over-age heat-treatable grades. Long deep bores in Inconel require specialized techniques (gun drilling, BTA drilling) to maintain straightness. Our 14 years in these materials is where experience matters most.
