01 · Valve types

Valve body categories.

Different valve types serve different functions and require different machining approaches. Here's what we build most often.

Ball valves

316L · 2000 psi

Full port and reduced port ball valve bodies. ISO 5211 actuator mounting. Trunnion or floating ball design.

Gate valves

Ductile iron · 316L

Gate valve bodies for on/off service. Flanged (ANSI B16.5) or threaded connections.

Check valves

316L · various

Swing check, lift check, wafer check. Pilot-operated for hydraulic systems.

Control valves

316L · Inconel

Globe valve bodies for throttling/control service. Precision seat geometry.

Butterfly valves

Ductile iron · 316L

Wafer and lug-style butterfly valve bodies. Resilient seat or metal seat.

Needle valves

316L · Monel

Fine-throttling valves for instrumentation and fluid control.

Diaphragm valves

316L · Hastelloy

Diaphragm-actuated valves for clean/aseptic service. Pharmaceutical, food.

Pressure relief

316L · Inconel

Safety/pressure relief valve bodies. ASME Section VIII code compliant design.

Choke valves

Inconel · stellite

Oil & gas production choke valves. Erosion-resistant materials for sand-laden service.

FAQ

Valve Bodies questions.

General industrial: ductile iron (cost-effective, adequate). General process: 316L stainless. Marine/saltwater: Monel K-500. Oil & gas sour service: Inconel 625 or duplex 2205/2507. High temperature: Inconel 718 or 625. Aggressive chemistry: Hastelloy C-276 or Monel 400. Material selection is critical — specify based on fluid, temperature, pressure, and sour-service requirements.
Hydrostatic pressure test to 1.5× rated pressure for 10 minutes (industrial standard per API 598). Helium leak detection for critical valves. Witnessed testing with customer or third-party inspection available. Documentation package includes: test pressure, duration, leak rate (if measured), pass/fail. For fire-safe valves per API 607, additional fire test at qualified lab.
NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 governs materials for sour (H2S) service. Specific hardness limits: typically <22 HRC for wetted surfaces on pressure-containing parts. Material selection restricted (no free-machining grades). We provide NACE-qualified materials with documented hardness verification. Full traceability from mill heat through finished valve body.
ISO 5211 standardizes pneumatic/electric actuator mounting to valve body. Bolt patterns F03 through F35 depending on valve size. Drive shafts with standardized keying. We machine ISO 5211 mounting as standard option on ball valves and butterfly valves. Customer-supplied actuator can be mounted for turnkey valve assembly.
Ball valve seat: machined for specific seal interference with ball. Typical tolerance ±0.025 mm on seat bore. Surface finish Ra 0.8 µm for proper seal. For high-pressure applications, precision seat preparation is critical. We maintain seat manufacturing processes that ensure consistent valve performance — no leak issues from manufacturing variation.
Prototype custom valve bodies: 3-5 weeks. Production qualified valves (with pressure test and documentation): 5-8 weeks. Oil & gas qualified with NACE testing: 8-12 weeks. Complete valve assembly with actuator integration: 8-16 weeks. For repeat production orders, 4-6 weeks from PO typical.
