FAQ

Space & Satellite questions.

Space qualification varies by mission: (1) Commercial LEO: often lighter requirements, AS9100 workflow + customer qualification. (2) GEO and beyond: stricter screening, component-level qualification. (3) Military/defense space: ITAR + additional defense-specific qualification. We provide AS9100-compatible documentation, material traceability, inspection reports. Full space qualification (radiation hardening, thermal vacuum, vibration testing) typically handled by customer or qualification lab — we provide qualified base hardware.
Space technology falls under EAR (Export Administration Regulations) for commercial space, ITAR for defense space. We are ITAR-registered for ITAR-controlled technical data. For EAR-controlled technology, appropriate export authorizations required — we work within customer's EAR export compliance framework. For foreign satellite customers accessing US technology, export licenses handled case-by-case per specific program requirements.
Common space materials: 6061-T6 (satellite bus structure), 7075-T6 (higher strength), Ti Gr.5 (lightweight structural), Inconel 718 (rocket engine), Invar 36 (thermal stability), OFE Cu (thermal management). All with full AMS certification. For vacuum service, outgassing properties matter — specifically chosen materials and processing.
NewSpace (SpaceX-era commercial): faster schedules, iterative design, mid-scale production (hundreds to thousands of satellites), cost-focused manufacturing. Traditional aerospace: slower schedules, one-off or limited run, quality/reliability focused, higher cost. We serve both — faster delivery for NewSpace, full documentation for traditional. NewSpace programs often appreciate supplier flexibility and rapid iteration capability.
We provide: manufacturing to customer specification, dimensional inspection, material certification. Additional qualification testing (thermal vacuum, vibration, radiation) routed through specialty test labs — customer manages or we coordinate. For satellite components requiring flight heritage demonstration, work integrates into customer's qualification campaign. Full flight hardware manufacture possible within customer's qualified manufacturing framework.
Commercial satellite programs: 3-12 months typical. Launch vehicle components: 6-18 months. Research satellites: 6-24 months. Ongoing production (Starlink-class, constellation satellites): monthly deliveries with standing PO. For NewSpace programs, lead times are often shorter (weeks instead of months) — we can accommodate rapid iteration schedules.
