FAQ

Defense questions.

CIFProto is ITAR-registered per 22 CFR 122 for receipt of ITAR-controlled technical data from US customers. We can receive ITAR drawings, specifications, and technical data for manufacturing. Finished parts shipped back to US customer — customer is responsible for re-export compliance and customs documentation. Access controls maintained on ITAR technical data — restricted file storage, identified personnel only.
We operate AS9100-compatible workflow but not formal AS9100-certified. Our defense customers (primes) typically hold AS9100 and use us for Tier-2/Tier-3 manufacturing. We provide documentation satisfying customer AS9100 supplier audit requirements: AS9102 FAI, AMS material certifications, AS5553 counterfeit electronic part prevention (for electronic components). For directly-certified AS9100 work, partnership with certified US shops available.
Common defense materials we stock or source: 4340 Q&T (ordnance steel), 17-4 PH stainless, 7075-T6 (airframe), Ti Gr.5 (lightweight structural), Inconel 718 (rocket/missile). Full AMS certification. Traceability to mill heat. For specific programs requiring qualified material (Qualified Products List / QPL), material sourced from QPL supplier with appropriate certification.
For defense electronics components (capacitors, ICs), counterfeit prevention is critical. Our approach: do not sell electronic components (only manufacture mechanical parts). For purchased hardware (fasteners, standard components), sourcing only from authorized distributors, with documentation chain. Per AS5553 / AS6171 counterfeit prevention requirements.
Standard defense work: Unclassified or For Official Use Only (FOUO) — we can handle with ITAR controls. Secret or higher classification: requires US facility clearance — we partner with US-cleared manufacturers for classified work. Most Tier-3 defense manufacturing is unclassified technical (specific drawings, specifications) — ITAR-controlled but not formally classified. This covers most defense customer needs.
Defense programs typically have long lead times vs commercial. Prototype development: 4-12 weeks. Qualification testing: 8-24 weeks. Production ramp: 6-18 months. Production orders: monthly or quarterly deliveries. Defense schedules driven by program milestones and government approvals — plan well ahead. For urgent defense work (operational deployments), expedited service possible with appropriate program justification.
