PBT.
Engineering thermoplastic.
Electrical-grade.
PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate) — engineering thermoplastic. Excellent electrical properties, heat resistance, dimensional stability. Standard for connectors, electrical components.
Key principles.
Semi-crystalline
High crystallinity gives stiffness and chemical resistance. Density 1.31 g/cm³.
UTS 50-60 MPa
Stiff, strong, dimensionally stable. Glass-filled grades higher.
UL94 V-0 grades
Self-extinguishing flame-retardant grades. Standard for electrical.
HDT 60°C unfilled, 200°C glass-filled
Glass-filled grades survive solder reflow temperatures.
Excellent
Resists most chemicals at room temp. Limited at elevated temp.
Connectors, electrical
Electrical connectors, switches, automotive ignition components.
FAQ
PBT vs PET?
Both polyesters. PBT processes easier, faster crystallization. PET clearer, used for bottles. PBT for engineering.
Glass-filled grades?
30% glass standard for high-strength PBT. Doubles modulus, raises HDT to 200°C.
UL94 ratings?
Standard PBT V-2. Flame-retardant grades V-0 (self-extinguishing). Electrical industry standard.
Hydrolysis resistance?
Pure PBT hydrolyzes in hot water. Hydrolysis-resistant grades available for automotive coolant exposure.
Laser welding?
PBT laser-welds well. Standard for automotive electrical connector assembly.
Comparable materials?
Nylon (PA) similar applications. PBT stiffer, less moisture absorption. Higher cost.
