FAQ

Agriculture questions.

Agricultural equipment sees severe service — abrasion, impact, moisture, chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides), temperature extremes. Material selection: 4140 Q&T for structural (good strength + fatigue), 8620 carburized for wear (hardened surface + tough core), abrasion-resistant plates (Hardox 450/500), stainless for chemical contact. Coatings: powder coat for cosmetic, galvanize for structural protection, chrome plate for precision sliding surfaces.
Precision ag growth areas: GPS-guided autonomous tractors, variable-rate fertilizer and pesticide application, yield monitoring and mapping, agricultural drones (spraying, mapping), autonomous harvest robots. Manufacturing opportunities: sensor housings, robotic components, precision GPS mounts, communication hardware. Ag-tech startups driving rapid growth in this space.
Agricultural wear components (plow shares, harvester blades, sprocket teeth) require hardened steels: through-hardened D2 or A2 tool steel (hard throughout), case-hardened 8620 or 4140 (hard surface + tough core), or abrasion plate (Hardox). Heat treatment critical — we work with NADCAP-qualified heat treaters for aerospace-spec components and specialty ag heat treaters for standard wear parts.
Irrigation hardware must handle water chemistry (often mineral-laden), UV exposure, pressure cycling. Materials: 316L for components contacting water (pumps, valves, manifolds), HDPE for plumbing, brass for fittings. For desalination and treatment plant integration, duplex stainless for higher-performance applications.
Ag drones (DJI Agras, XAG) are becoming mainstream for crop spraying. Scale: tens of thousands deployed globally annually. Components: similar to general UAV (airframe, motor mounts) plus specialty (spray nozzles, tank hardware, pump mounting). Weight and precision both important. We support ag drone manufacturers with structural and specialty components.
Agricultural equipment programs: 6-12 months typical product development cycle. Component manufacturing: 4-8 weeks for first article, 4-8 weeks for production orders. Ag is seasonal — pre-season production (spring planting, fall harvest) drives tight schedules. Plan accordingly; we coordinate with customer schedules for seasonal delivery requirements.
